About Timothy Monzingo

I got my first taste of the print journalism world as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University, where I took a media law course in summer 2006. It trounced me, but I was undeterred and continued learning the craft at SFA and the University of North Texas. At UNT, I wrote for the North Texas Daily for three semesters. My first real job in the field came the year I graduated, when I was listings clerk for the Denton Record-Chronicle. I was also a features writer there, and the guidance of those editors led me to a first-place award for feature writing from the Texas Association Press Managing Editors in 2010. I boomeranged back to my native East Texas where I became the staff writer for the Jacksonville Daily Progress in Cherokee County. As part of a two-reporter newsroom, I had my pick of topics and stories. I headed a short distance north after that to join the Tyler Morning Telegraph as the night-side breaking news guy, but had the pleasure to work with some great staffers, editors and sources who gave me a deeper understanding of my region. In the pursuit of a greater understanding of 21st century journalism, I accepted an internship at the Houston Business Journal, a weekly business publication, where I rubbed shoulder with leaders in the nation's fourth largest city, got a better understanding of web management and pursued photography more. At the end of that internship, I headed south east again to become a staff member of the Hearst corporation's Beaumont Enterprise. My focus here is breaking and in-depth news. I get to look at local events and happenings through a nation and state-wide lens.
