About Toby Barton

I am an technical, reliable, and eager-to-learn engineer with the desire to be a full-time engineer. I am incredibly qualified for a variety of engineering positions due to my experience on professional projects, knowledge on engineering topics and skills, and experience from school related projects. First, my professional experience ranges from computer-aided design (CAD) to performing engineering change orders (ECOs) to analyzing manufacturing processes. My CAD experience is with SolidWorks, and I have the ability to design devices and fixtures, write bills of materials (BoM), and create assembly and part drawings. Professionally, I have designed a cup-holder for the laboratory staff, and I am currently working on designing a wrench handle cover. I have performed ECOs for fixture design, introducing fixtures to a process, and for written safety programs. All ECOs required extensive communication and technical knowledge with all reviewers of the documents. I have analyzed multiple lean manufacturing processes with the intention to improve ergonomics by eliminating, substituting, or introducing engineering controls without disrupting the flow of the line. I have consulted on automating processes, designing new fixtures, and the configuration of equipment. Second, I consistently look for opportunities to improve my engineering skillset in my free time. I am taking a courses to better understand Lean Six Sigma, watching videos and learning new CAD techniques, and learning the basics of Python. I pride myself in always being driven to learn new and novel concepts, and I strive to take on new challenges. Lastly, I have a plethora of engineering experience from my time as a student at UC Davis. I worked on my senior design project, CAD projects, and microcontroller projects. My senior design project encompassed the complete design process for a medical device, which included working as a team with 4 other students, a project proposal, project design, engineering drawings and circuit diagrams, risk assessments, verification and validation procedures, field testing, assembly and usage instructions, and presenting a minimally functioning prototype. The CAD and microcontroller projects were a series of small projects that built a strong foundation for each topic. My CAD project culminated with the design and assembly of a surgical stapler, and my microcontroller final project was a temperature controlled fan. For my career, I am passionate about becoming an engineer and look forward to improving my skillset throughout my career!
