About Toby Ellis

Toby Ellis is a British composer, orchestrator, percussionist and a member of BAFTA Connect. With a passion for storytelling through music and sound, Toby is best known for his work on award-winning short animated films, global TV placements, and video games. He holds an MSc with Distinction and a BSc with First Class Honours in Music Composition & Sound Design for Film & Games, and brings over seven years of professional experience across more than fifty creative projects spanning diverse styles and genres. Toby’s portfolio includes composing, designing, and recording interactive audio for indie and award-winning mobile games, as well as television placements with major networks like the BBC, Channel 5, ABC, CNN, Fox, and more. His work also extends to film dramas, sci-fi/fantasy/action-adventure projects, prize-winning animated shorts, and online documentaries. In recent years, Toby has expanded his expertise through notable experiences, including writing and recording his original music for video games with Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, performed by a live orchestra at the world-renowned Synchron Stage in Vienna (HMW 2025). He also became a member of BAFTA’s Connect program (2022) and gained invaluable industry experience working with renowned engineer Alan Meyerson (Star Wars: Jedi Survivor) at Mix with the Masters (2022) – Studios La Fabrique. Toby is currently writing and developing bespoke music and sound in-house at TVM Studios for Foques (2023–26) and G-Gaming Limited's 99 Royale (2020-26). He also composed the music for the global documentary TV album War Stories (2020), in collaboration with Ian Livingstone, Jake Jackson, Thom Powell, Oscar Aldred, and Danny Cullen, for Universal Production Music UK's label, True Stories. His extensive credits include music & sound design for upcoming iOS and Android game titles, as well as television music placements across international networks, including The One Show, Love Island, and various European, American, Australian, and Japanese programs & ad spots. Toby is also recognised for his indie projects, with his team finishing as frontrunners for People's Choice at the annual Global Game Jam with Astra'eology (2021) and Lancaster (2020) at NUA. His contributions extend to numerous festival shorts, such as Penny Drops (2024), Love You Always (2023), Skipping Hollie (2023), and Our Little Boat (2023), The Beachcombers (2022), I Florentina (2019). He also composed the original score for award-winning shorts Imaginary (2020) and Light Reminders (2019) by artist and illustrator Megan Ryan.
