About Tom Bales

I have worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for 35 years and I am a 3rd Generation Shipbuilder. I began my career as a Marine Electrician prior to attending College. After graduating, started as a Logistics Engineer conducting Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) analysis for various SSN 688 Class submarine systems. Lead RCM and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for numerous systems on the SSN21 Seawolf Submarine. Managed the fabrication and installation of the 21-Inch Torpedo Tube Trainer for the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. Served as the lead Field Engineer for Cranes providing engineering and project management for new crane construction and overhaul. Promoted to Maintenance Planning Supervisor for the North Yard. Currently serve as the Maintenance Engineering Manager for Newport News Shipbuilding and lead the Facilities Asset Mobile Environment (FAME) Team. My Team is responsible for all Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Procedures for the Plant. I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA. Lean Certified by ODU and earned a Certified Plant Maintenance Manager (CPMM) certification.
