About Tom Dunkel

In 2006, I was fired from my corporate finance job. I had a wife, a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter at home. I was supposed to be the provider and I was failing. I had a great education, worked with some very accomplished people up to that point and had achieved quite a bit. But this was the third time in 4 years that I lost my job. I was done relying on others for my livelihood! I felt like the universe was pushing me to finally start my entrepreneurial career that I had been dreaming about. So that’s what I did. I searched around for businesses to buy. I looked at various franchise opportunities. But I was drawn to real estate. BUT IT WAS 2006! Little did I know that the Great Recession was right around the corner, ready to test my resolve and every skill I had. I got crushed those next few years. All of the money I had set aside to start my venture was gone. I was in debt and couldn’t pay back what I owed. I was in trouble. My family was in trouble. I had to figure something out. I had to persevere. That’s when I learned about distressed mortgage notes. In 2010, my new business partner Joe Downs and I started US Mortgage Resolution with It didn’t happen overnight, but we built a business that eventually took off and has now generated over in revenue. The ongoing success of USMR allowed us to venture into other real estate businesses. We tried house flipping, hard money lending and short-term rentals. Nothing really worked out. Then we found self storage - now we have acquired over of self storage across 7 states. On my journey, I have had the pleasure of meeting several world-class operators across multiple asset classes - self storage (of course), multifamily apartments, mobile home parks, private lending, oil & gas and medical office buildings - to name a few. I have invested personally with these operators that I know, like and trust.
