About Tom Herman

I sit at a unique vantage point; after 40 years of professional surveying over much of Northern California, I have seen many positive changes in land and community, and I’m proud to have taken part as a professional surveyor and community volunteer. These changes include the growth of the Mendocino College Foundation, the Rotary Club of Willits, the Willits Chamber of Commerce, and the Frank R. Howard Foundation. I’ve been a volunteer Board member and past president of these organizations at various times for many years. I also sit on the Little Lake Fire Protection District Board—although I now leave the actual fire fighting to those with younger joints. As Principal Surveyor at SHN, and before that as the principal of my own surveying firm, I have been fortunate to have managed numerous projects that benefit our communities. A few include the energy efficient maintenance facility of the Mendocino Transit Authority, emergency repair of Noyo Harbor after the tsunami in 2011, the City of Willits’ wastewater treatment and water reclamation, the Eastside Road Housing Project for the Northern Circle Indian Housing Authority, and the conservation of the Mailliard Ranch by the family and the Save the Redwoods League. After a 40-year career, I remain looking forward! Sharing my knowledge and experiences with the next generation of surveyors has always been an interest, but with retirement looming, mentoring is now a passion. So much so, that I’ve even started a LinkedIn profile!
