About Tom Janzen

Responsibilities included planning, budgeting, regulatory approval and delivery of system maintenance programs along with the business side of Fortis’ GIS system. Tom joined Calgary Power Ltd.(now FortisAlberta) after graduating from Assiniboine Community College in 1979 with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Tom held varying technical, leadership and management positions during his 37-year tenure with Fortis in areas including Distribution Design and Planning, Customer Service, Vegetation Management and Maintenance for both FortisBC and FortisAlberta. He also served in planning and financial management leadership roles for Fortis’ Transmission and Distribution business sectors. Some of the highlights of his career include building successful Asset Management and Vegetation Management programs throughout Alberta and British Columbia based on the needs of the Fortis utilities and supported by data analytics. The use of various mobile data collection and GIS systems which Tom was instrumental in implementing provided the ability to understand the challenges encountered by field personnel and capture information to help address those challenges within existing business constraints. Tom has been a member of the Service Continuity Committee of the Canadian Electrical Association (CEA) for the last four years. This Committee is responsible for reporting on distribution system component and system reliability and performance. He has made a significant impact on CEA’s analytics program through his service on both the sub-cause code subcommittee and the new Measures Task Group. Tom has served as the Chair of the CEA’s Service Continuity Committee for the last three years.
