Background
About Tom Magerman
Tom Magerman holds a master degree in Business Economics and Information Systems Engineering (1996), a PhD degree in Business Economics (2011), and a Postgraduate in Big Data and Analytics in Business and Management (2017). He started working at the University of Leuven in 1996, where he quickly specialized in ICT support for research and was involved in miscellaneous research projects for the Flemish government (AWI), Belgian government (DWTC) and European Commission (DG Research and EUROSTAT). In 1998 he left university and founded XINFOR, a consultancy firm for IT support for scientific environments, data mining, management and processing, and project management, and realized projects with universities and government. In 2001 he returned to academia, first as a IT consultant, next as a research fellow, to join the new erected ECOOM - a policy research institute to support Flemish research, development and innovation policy. He was involved in numerous projects using patent data or patent based indicators, including harmonization efforts (EUROSTAT) and heavily involved in the PATSTAT community (EPO Worldwide Patent Statistical Database). Researches focus shifted to science-technology linkages, and in recent years he concentrated on the implementation of text mining techniques on patent and publication data for domain alienation, science-technology linkage and trend and emerging field analysis. He finished a Phd in November 2011 on the impact of the science-intensity of patents and the presence of an anti-commons effect, using non-patent references, citation analysis and text mining techniques. Currently he is active as lecturer in applied informatics at UCLL (University College Leuven-Limburg), as research fellow at ITech (Big Data / Data Mining / Text Mining) and as research fellow at the International Centre for Research on Entrepreneurship, Technology and Innovation Management (INCENTIM), division of the University of Leuven Research & Development, and active in IT consultancy and services for scientific data management and processing.
