About Tom Mkhwanazi
Tom Mkhwanazi has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Whosale & Retail SETA (W & RSETA) since February 2019. He has been the alternate trustee of the three pension funds the Copartes Pension Fund, Motor Industry Provident Fund and Auto workers Provident Fund respectively. He served as chairperson of the Foodbev SETA. He also served as the Deputy Chairperson of the National Association of Bargaining Councils. He currently serve as the Council member of the West Coast College, he is also Chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee and was the Chairperson of the Finance Committee. Tom worked at MIBCO as General Secretary (CEO). He also worked at merSETA as the Company Secretary was later promoted to General Manager of Corporate Governance and Chief Operations Officer for HR, Strategy and Compliance. To also worked for two municipalities in uThungulu Regional Council in Richards Bay and Madibeng Local Municipality where he held various positions as Senior Administrative Officer, Chief Administrative Officer and Divisional Manager: Secretariat. His career began as an educator in Durban, Umlazi in 1991. He implemented the corporate governance framework which assisted the MerSETA which propelled the MerSETA to become one of the best performing SETAs. In 2017 to 2018 he was the Adjunct lecturer on corporate governance programme, Monash University. At MIBCO he oversaw the management and administration of social security funds, namely, Sick, Accident and Maternity Pay funds ), Additional Holiday Pay Fund and Motor Industry Retirement Provident Funds for the benefits of employers and employees falling within the Motor Industry (This include being appointed in terms section 13B Administrator in in terms of PFA by the FSCA). He successful lobbied for the VAT dispensation for the Bargaining Councils in relation to the VAT Act, Tax relief in relation to the withholding PAYE as well as the Income Tax. This included a new Tax dispensation for the treatment of PAYE by Bargaining Councils. Tom’s academic achievements include with a BA honours and an HDE from the University of Durban Westville, post-graduate diplomas in Public Management, Labour Law, Interpreting & Drafting of Contracts and Corporate Law from various institutions, including Technikon SA (Now University of South Africa), the Rand Afrikaans University, University of Johannesburg, respectively.
