About Tom Oconnor

Having qualified as an RGN in 1996, I am a committed nurse academic with more than 20 year’s experience in nursing and midwifery education. I am a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland holding a Bachelors in Nursing Studies I also hold a Higher Diploma in Education and a Master’s of Science in Advanced Nursing from the University of Ulster (2002). In 2013 I completed an Education Doctorate in the University of Keele having written my thesis on the gendered identities of male nurses in Ireland. In my professional background, I registered as a RGN in 1996 having completed a registration diploma programme in general nursing in the Netherlands and have clinical practice experience in the Netherlands, Australia and Ireland. I registered as an RNT in and having worked as a nurse tutor on certificate and diploma pre-registration programmes, I transferred to higher education at the commencement of undergraduate in 2002. I have a wealth of experience in academia and have held senior academic roles in University College Dublin and latterly in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In 2009 I was recognised for my contribution to nursing education and was awarded the prestigious UCD Fellowship in Teaching and Academic Development. I have developed a broad and diverse research profile with a focus on patient outcomes and education and leadership development in nursing and the health professions. I have a particular interest and expertise in education for the treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers and am a Trustee of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel.
