About Tom Roberts

Tom Roberts is an experienced engineering management professional, focusing today on PDC cutter technology. He is responsible for the overall strategy and deployment of the latest high technology PDC cutters into ReedHycalog drill bits. In 2011, Tom managed the launch of the Helios cutter technology a leading ultra thermal resistant cutter for the industry. This was followed by the Helios Inferno range in 2014 and today with the highly successful ION cutter technology designed specific to the application. Prior to his current position, Tom was the Fixed Cutter Drill Bit Product Line Director, where he managed a product line team introducing new fixed cutter technologies. Tom together with his team received the "Business Case Competition Finalist Award for NOV Technology Commercialization" with the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. This business case focused on drilling dynamic optimization and the automation of drilling rigs. Before working in the Product LIne, he held various roles most recently as Product Engineering Manager of Drill Bits with Grant Prideco and Research Project leader with Schlumberger, where he managed a joint industry project funded by the DOE to illustrate developments in PDC drill bits and the benefits of real-time drilling optimization (Ref: SPE 91782). He also supervised engineers developing a new "Black Box" vibration recorder. Tom's roots began in Stonehouse, UK with Hycalog as Drill Bit Senior Design and Development Engineer, where he received awards for introducing a new revolutionary drill bit design with a 360-degree contact area for directional drilling. He is very proud today, to be a part of the new ReedHycalog division at NOV.
