About Tom Scanlan

Academic and Professional: Completed electronics and radio schools in USMC and taught electronics in USMC, 1952-55. Did research as an undergraduate student in the areas of antiaircraft warheads (1956-New Mexico Research Div, NMIMT), physical oceanography (1957-Scripps Inst. Oceanography), radiation effects on plants (1958-USDA)), and radio astronomy (1958-Naval Research Lab-NRL, Md). Worked on underwater sound projects at Naval Electronics Lab-NEL, San Diego, after graduating (1963-64). Research publications include co-authorship of research done at NRL and NEL. Taught physics, astronomy and math at Grossmont College from 1964-1990. Writing and Editing: Worked on Greenbelt HS newspaper as reporter and columnist. Associate editor of college newspaper Goldpan at New Mexico Tech. Wrote and published lab manuals in physics and physical science at Grossmont College. Primary reviewer of early editions of astronomy text book Universe, by Kaufmann. Published articles in Astronomical Society of the Pacific and Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, as well as guest editorials in local newspaper, Daily Californian. Editor and columnist of college retiree newsletter, Grapevine from 1990-2009. Published several short stories and poems in the 1990's. Self published 350 page illustrated autobiograph/memoirs, Footprints in the Sand,in 2009. Published Longhorns, Silver and Liquid Gold, a 350 page documented history of his pioneer ancestors in Texas and New Mexico, 2020.
