Background

About Tom Simcock

Tom is a Research Fellow & the Research Manager of the Healthy Housing Initiative at the University of Huddersfield. With extensive experience in leading and managing multi-disciplinary research and evaluation projects, Tom's expertise spans diverse areas, including health and housing, the private rented sector, and the Fire and Rescue Services. A unifying thread throughout his research is the contribution of applied psychological perspectives, drawing upon theories from social, organisational, and environmental psychology. Tom is currently leading transformative initiatives to drive positive change within public services. Tom is leading a cultural review of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as part of a project titled 'Moving Forward: A Framework for Change.' This project, funded by NYFRS and the University of Huddersfield's AHRC & ESRC Impact Acceleration Accounts, aims to identify challenges and co-produce actionable solutions to foster a culture of excellence. Tom also leads research funded by Battersea Cats & Dogs Home, which explores the economic benefits of pet ownership in the private rented sector. Tom recently led a major research project funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in partnership with the Scottish Government. The project explored the challenges low-income renters face in Scotland and co-produced policy solutions to these challenges. Tom's track record of success in managing large-scale research projects and building relationships with stakeholders positions him as a sought-after expert. Leveraging his expertise, Tom actively engages in knowledge exchange initiatives to support evidence-informed policymaking and foster links between academics and broader stakeholders. Tom is a Board Member and Chair of the Housing Studies Association, the learned society for housing research. Tom's dedication to driving positive change has earned national and international recognition, including citations in government consultations and media coverage in outlets such as the New York Times and The Times. As a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society and a certified member of the Market Research Society, Tom brings a unique blend of academic rigour and practical expertise to his work. Policymakers regularly call upon him for his expertise, and he has previously given evidence to legislative bodies such as the Welsh Parliament. Tom's passion for sharing knowledge beyond academia includes his podcast "Under One Roof", which shares discussions on housing and health issues.
