Background
About Tom Wallach
Dr. Thomas Wallach is the division chief and fellowship director of Pediatric Gastroenterology, as well as a translational scientist at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn. Our division is rapidly expanding our capabilities to provide high quality gastrointestinal care to underserved children in Brooklyn, with a specific focus on health equity in both our practice and research. Dr. Wallach is a translational and clinical scientist focusing on the intestinal epithelial barrier and enteric nervous system, with experience in RNA sequencing, cell culture, advanced microscopy and imaging techniques, proteomics, quality improvement techniques, and clinical science from both a chart review and trial perspective. His focus is on using technological advances and computational methods to drive study of underlying mechanism and identify treatment modalities for diseases of intestinal epithelial regulation, such as environmental enteropathy (a condition resulting from recurrent enteric infection which engenders the majority of stunted growth worldwide) and the highly prevalent and morbid field of diseases of gut brain interaction (DGBI). Ongoing work focuses on the intersection of immune tolerance effects in pathogenesis of EE and possible intersection with variations in allergic and autoimmune disease between the global north and south, application of novel metagenomic and RNA sequencing techniques to further understanding EE pathogenesis and target therapeutic modalities, and work determining the public health impact of COVID-19 on pediatric and low-income populations in collaboration with colleagues from the SUNY Downstate School of Public Health.
