He was an honors student and member of CSU's student chapter of The Wildlife Society, where he served as the treasurer for one year and conservation chair for another. Tomas has had several opportunities to gain experience doing wildlife conservation and habitat assessment work. He is currently employed as the statewide wildlife technician for New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. He helps with a variety of different projects researching wildlife with the state including checking the health of tagged black bears and their cubs during hibernation, locating, capturing, and tagging wild turkeys, implementing camera trap projects to survey for a variety of wildlife species, and many more. He also has worked for the National Park Service at Crater Lake National Park. As a member of the wildlife team, he helped survey many of the park's species including birds of prey, bats, mesocarnivores, large carnivores, and a variety of frogs and amphibians. In this position not only did he help with collecting field data, be he also helped with data analysis for camera trapping and audio recording projects and assisted in writing year-end reports of the findings for the mesocarnivore and large carnivore monitoring project. He also has experience working with other state wildlife agencies from his time employed as a seasonal wildlife technician on the Snowshoe Hare Project for Colorado Parks and Wildlife where he collected field data on the population of snowshoe hares in different forest types across Colorado as part of the Canada lynx recovery in the state. Tomás is also an avid outdoor enthusiast with a passion for wildlife and the natural world. In his freetime he enjoys getting outside into nature. Depending on the season, you can find him hiking, birdwatching, fishing, surfing, trail running, practicing photography, mountain biking, hunting, or catching a sunset somewhere with a nice view.
