About Tomi Kokkonen

I thrive on solving hard technical problems—especially those that require balancing multiple perspectives and stakeholder goals. Throughout my career, I've built and led teams, tackled complex system architectures, and helped organizations navigate the challenges of innovation.Currently, as Director of R&D at Valohai, I focus on developing an MLOps platform that enables machine learning teams to efficiently handle vast amounts of data and orchestrate compute across multiple cloud environments. My work involves optimizing infrastructure to ensure just-in-time resources for large-scale experiments while continuously improving the developer experience. Lately, I’ve been particularly interested in enhancing communication across teams, making sure that technical insights translate into actionable business decisions. Before Valohai, I co-founded and led NordicEdu and its spin-out company Knome, spending over a decade building unique and impactful games and digital experiences. I guided multidisciplinary teams, structured complex software prototypes at speed, and ensured that each project had a strong technical and business foundation. Across both companies, I completed over 40 projects, ranging from educational games to innovative digital tools, always pushing for originality and long-term impact.Whether it's designing scalable ML platforms or fostering high-performing teams, I am always drawn to the intersection of deep technical challenges and effective collaboration.
