About Toni Barstis

I am a scientifically-curious and hard-working physical-analytical chemist with extensive experience in academia. At Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN in the Department of Chemistry & Physics, I served as a faculty member for over 30 years, dedicating my profession to the education and advancement of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In this position, I taught undergraduate chemistry lecture and laboratory courses, designed research-based chemistry experiments, conducted research towards improved global health, funded a vigorous undergraduate research program, directed a Five-Year Dual Degree Engineering Program, and lead the Chemistry & Physics Department and STEM Division. I am still actively conducting PADs (paper-analytical devices) research by assessing the quality of medicines collected in Nepal and Ghana. In my current, part-time position at the University of Notre Dame, I am expanding my scientific knowledge and technical skills in the areas of bioengineering and chemical engineering. My responsibilities focus on supporting the faculty and undergraduate students in the chemical and biomolecular engineering labs by maintaining the units/instruments, ordering chemicals/supplies and lab equipment, ensuring lab safety, and assisting in the design of activities/experiments and lab spaces.
