The 2021 CNA of the Year is Tori Thomas!”When I heard those words and accepted my award, all of the reasons why I became a certified nursing assistant flashed across my mind. The transition from the communications industry to a career in healthcare was a change that required courage and determination. After working as a journalist, and also working for a printing/marketing firm that partners with multiple healthcare clients, I found myself being drawn to becoming a nurse.During my time as a journalist, I interviewed several healthcare officials, including nurses, and was always inspired by the articles I wrote. From covering murder trials, to arriving at the scene of a reported stabbing, to covering fundraiser events for people battling cancer, journalism taught me how to communicate with people going through serious times in their lives.While working for a printing/marketing firm that partners with multiple healthcare clients, I did some serious self-reflection, and knew it was time to pursue my life mission.I have been a CNA since December 2020, and have never felt more fulfilled in my life. Now I am ready to learn more.My goal is to widen my scope by becoming a licensed vocational nurse, and eventually, a registered nurse.Nursing is a calling, and I know that I am called to this role to make a positive difference in the lives of others. The early mornings, late nights, and long hours become a labor of love.I know this is where I belong.
