About Travis Nelson

As a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, I have experience working with teams of diverse backgrounds and skill sets. I understand how to be inclusive in seeking solutions to problems and draw out ideas from members of a team. My passion is to make things better. This desire grew from experiences many years ago as a Boy Scout, that you always leave the campsite better than you found it. This is a guiding principle I have tried to apply throughout my life. Being in the military, I have had many opportunities to make improvements. For example, working for an Air Force school, I heard faculty complain about the time they spent in-processing new students. With the help of a team of faculty, staff, vendors, and suppliers, I redesigned the process, reducing the cycle times and eliminating the expense of transportation. This set a new standard and the following year I made even more improvements to further reduce the process time and increase customer satisfaction. I have overseen the education and certification of Lean Six Sigma Green Belts. This required providing guidance and working with people spread out at more than two dozen locations across the United States. Beyond the management aspects of the job, I have taught process improvement courses to more than 200 people and personally mentored 20 onto Green Belt certification. My teaching and mentoring expertise has benefited from my success in leading 10 improvement projects over the past three years. Although I enjoy process improvement, other areas in my life have also brought me much satisfaction. Over the years, I have worked with the youth in our church. I have helped set up and run conferences and social activities for hundreds of youth, which helped them grow and mature into strong members of the community. My wife and children are truly my greatest joy and I am a better person because they are in my life. They have definitely left me better than they found me.
