About Trevor Berg

The past few weeks have me reflecting on my various careers over the years. I've been given several unique opportunities and held some really interesting tickets from the last 30+ years, sure I ask myself "what if" often but only with age and a complete shift in values am I really appreciative of where I am now. A recent evaluation has me listed as a "helper" and I truly couldn't agree more. From my early days in restaurant management to my end days managing in a machine shop, I've always held a "helper" type position. I can truly jump in pretty much anywhere. my style has been to jump in, help staff first and bridge the gap with management second. The "neck" or the "glue" of the company doesn't always work with some businesses: some owners lose touch with their staff, forget how to do things or become complacent. The trick in my position is to keep balance and continually communicate with staff and management. Sure you need to understand the business slugging it out in the trenches with the staff but you also need to figure out your teams strengths, record deficiencies, and all the while keeping your "ear to the ground" before you make change. Communication has always been a mix of charts, graphs, forms, documents, policies, analogies (i use far too many), praise, recognition, reward and so much more. Life keeps surprising me, just when you think you've figured it all out you learn something new. Management is change and how you deal with it. Technology, Media, Generational Gaps, World Events. always keep learning and adapt to change!
