Background
About Tristan Crees
As of January 2025, I have joined Hydrogen in Motion (H2M) to help bring their patented carbon-based hydrogen adsorption material to market. This material weakly attracts hydrogen molecules using "physisorption" and allows hydrogen storage that is "smaller, safer, cheaper" than the alternatives. My 25+ years of experience in robotics engineering, system integration and management provide the ideal background for developing business use cases for improved hydrogen energy storage - such as increasing drone range without sacrificing payload for a given take-off weight. My own business (Banksia Robotics Inc.) is still open but is not getting much attention while I focus on H2M's success! I was previously at Santuary.AI, helping to build humanoid robots. Before that, I led the AUV Operations group at Cellula Robotics Ltd, a company specializing in subsea projects and systems. AUVs are Autonomous Underwater Vehicles - basically robot submarines. They are also known as Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and variations thereof. My role involved overseeing AUV operations in the shop, pool, and at sea, and building a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and technologists to support Cellula's growth. Before that, I grew Cellula's Control Systems department from 1 person to 20+ over a decade. I also spearheaded the creation of Cellula's ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) in 2012. My core competencies include autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles (ROV), marine robotics, systems engineering, software architecture, problem-solving, brainstorming, team leadership, organization, written and oral communication, and budgeting. I am passionate about taking new features and developments into the field and demonstrating the capabilities and potential of robots for various applications and clients. I also have a solid academic background, with a BCSE degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from Monash University, and multiple publications in conferences and journals. Additionally, I have experience in leading and participating in professional associations, such as the OES, where I spearheaded the creation of the Vancouver chapter.
