Background

About Troy Carter

In 2018 I took my first professional internship. I was in the Orleans Civil District Court with the Honorable Judge Kern Reese. The experience was positively educational and enriching in a number of ways. And this experience certainly contributed to my ultimate decision to attend law school. From this, I could easily pretend that from then on I was driven down some straight and narrow road leading directly to my destiny as a law student as written in the stars, but life is seldom that simple. After graduating from Xavier University of Louisiana I immediately entered into an accelerated, full time program to receive the Certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), an internationally recognised teacher training and certification program moderated and accredited by Cambridge Assessment English, a department of Cambridge University. Shortly after completing this certificate I was offered a job teaching English in Rayong, Thailand, and I took it. Within 6 months of graduating undergrad, I was living alone in a foreign country. For four months I taught at one of the leading English language teaching companies in the world and the experience was invaluable to my development as both a human being and as a professional. I developed new levels of communicative skills, confidence, and cultural sensitivity, all highly important. But the most important thing I learned, was that I wanted to be a lawyer. The experience I had was wonderful. It was some of the most rewarding work I’d ever done. But I came to know that my calling was elsewhere. I knew that if I applied the same work ethic that I applied to that job to my studies in a law school, that I could, down the line, be a far more effective lawyer than I ever was as a teacher. I’m a firm believer in the adage that hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. But I’m an even bigger believer in the idea that hard work paired with talent succeeds best. And I think I have a greater talent for the study of the law than I do for the teaching of the English language. Both are noble professions and I’d be proud to go down either path. But, it seems that after all this talk, I did have a destiny in law after all. As a student at Tulane Law, I’ve taken a strong interest in every course that I’ve sat for. I’ve built meaningful relationships with my peers. And, I truly feel that with this skillset that I’m developing that I’ll be able to effectuate the kind of positive change that I want to see in the world, and on my own terms.
