About Tyler Black

As the Medical Director of one of North America's only dedicated pediatric psychiatric emergency inpatient units, I have developed significant expertise in risk assessment, emergency pediatric psychiatric care, clinical pharmacology, and psychiatric diagnosis. I care deeply about the psychiatric profession, and the treatment and care of youth and families who need mental health care. I care about developing tools that work. I have developed one tool, the ASARI free for clinical use, for complete and thorough medicolegal suicide risk assessment documentation. Using the latest research and advanced technologies, I am co-developer of the HEARTSMAP, an online and national tool for Emergency Departments throughout Canada to document and triage mental health emergency department visits. My clinical areas of expertise and teaching are primarily suicidology, video gaming in youth, cross-cultural psychiatry, pharmacology, and emergency psychiatric care. I am passionate about teaching to medical learners, parents and teachers, and have appeared on television and in print many times. I am the co-author of Pediatric Mental Health Emergencies in Tintinelli's Emergency Medicine, and am an author of the newest edition of the Clinical Handbook of Psychopharmacology, Child and Adolescent Edition. Completing the Sauder School of Business Physician Leadership Program, I have contributed to the development of many programs at BC Children's Hospital (Clinical and Systems Transformation, Clinical Informatics, Suicide Risk Protocol, Kelty Mental Health Pinwheel Series), in community organizations (Boys and Girls Club, Delta School District), and in national and international organizations (International Society for the Study of Self-Injury, IWK Health Sciences Center).
