About Tyler Burston

I am twenty two year old educator, writer, and artist from Jersey City, NJ. In 2023, I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with degrees in Film and Writing, and am beginning my career in New York City schools as an elementary school teacher. As both an artist and educator, I am inspired by a lifelong love of writing and passion for film, music, and art, and the desire to communicate in healthy and socially enriching ways. In my creative work, I am interested in exploring issues of psychology, race, gender, class, collective memory, and the relationship between cultural practice and communal well being. In this pursuit, I often combine filmmaking with elements of poetry, painting, sculpture, collage to create multimedia works. As a writer, I have been published in the essay collection American Struggle: Teens Respond to Jacob Lawrence published by Six Foot Press in 2021. In that same year, I was awarded Washington University's Norma Lowry Memorial Prize for Poetry for the poem,"babylon songs". Both my writing and media production work can be found at Silk Magazine, an online music journalism platform created by my friends and I in the summer of 2020. Silk Magazine was created as a means of uplifting young Black artists and celebrating boundary-pushing work in music. As a senior staff member, I am responsible for contributing pitches, writing articles, conducting outreach to artists and managers, and hosting and producing the Silk Magazine Podcast, featuring video and audio interviews of artists.
