About Tyler Thorp

Tyler has more than 15 years of experience in both in-house and outside counsel positions handling patent and trademark matters for clients ranging from startups to global corporations. He has advised clients regarding patent filing strategy and portfolio management, acted as in-house patent counsel for startup and early stage companies, and drafted and prosecuted U.S. and international patent applications covering innovations in computer software, cloud-based services, augmented reality, semiconductor devices and fabrication, medical devices, telecommunications (e.g, 5G), and consumer electronics. He has a passion for deeply understanding his client’s technology and partnering with them to develop strong and enforceable patent portfolios that support their business objectives. Tyler has a decade of prior engineering experience in hardware and software development. He helped pioneer the design and development of three-dimensional non-volatile semiconductor memories at Matrix Semiconductor (acquired by SanDisk) and developed software for automating the design of integrated circuits at Sun Microsystems. He is a named inventor on over 65 U.S. patents and was previously an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. Tyler's educational background includes a J.D. degree from Santa Clara University and B.S, M.S, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. Tyler is admitted to the state bars of Washington and California, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
