About Tyra Whitney

Tyra Whitney is a News Producer with ABC 7 Chicago. Prior to that, she moved to the Windy City to help launch NewsNation, a national cable news network. She has worked in various markets including WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA and WRIC in Richmond, VA. Tyra produced newscasts with several breaking news stories including the University of Chicago Encampment Protest, Virginia Beach Mass Shooting coverage and reaction to the selection of Pope Leo XIV. She's also used her experience to mentor and educate younger journalists through panel discussions, private mentorship and working as an adjunct professor. Tyra is a proud graduate of Norfolk State University where she got her bachelor’s in communication and a master’s degree in Public Relations. While in college, she worked on a team to launch a new segment for the University’s TV station called ‘Inventing Our History’ that told the stories of African-American Inventors; the project became a part of the TV Production Curriculum at Norfolk State University. Her long term goal is to become a newsroom manager and encourage diverse voices and approaches to everyday story telling and editorial content.
