About Tyson Carmody

For the past decade I have worked with youth, supporting young Aboriginal men to realise their potential, reconnecting them with the lessons behind cultural ways of life, assisting them to build self-confidence, a strong identity and to challenge the existing told narrative about Aboriginal men. A narrative that continues to affect the ability to see our own true worth as strong, caring, and proud Aboriginal men. All my life I have struggled with the stretched view of what an Aboriginal man should look like, behave like and sound like. The perpetuation of these stereotypes has massive impacts on our mental health. Changing this narrative for Aboriginal men individually and collectively is imperative to our healing. I have experienced first-hand the effects of mental health and how it impacts our relationships and all other aspects of our lives. I continue to see our men both young and old, struggle with finding value in their purpose and worth. As a society where and when do we value our Aboriginal men and the important roles we have in our family and community? Understanding how challenging it can be for Aboriginal men to engage with counselling services and constantly being frustrated with the lack of culturally competent services that are available. It has been my mission to establish an Aboriginal led, social enterprise that provides culturally safe and strong counselling/coaching programs on country, delivered through Narrative Approaches for Aboriginal people.
