Background

About Uli Schotten

I am a physician and translational electrophysiologist with a long-standing interest in understanding cardiac rhythm disorders, particularly atrial fibrillation. After studying medicine in Aachen, Glasgow, and Malta, I completed four years of clinical training in cardiology at the University Hospital Aachen before moving to Maastricht in I currently serve as Professor of Physiology and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Maastricht University. In addition, I am actively involved in the Network of Competence for Atrial Fibrillation (AFNET), where I contribute to the development and implementation of translational research strategies in clinical trials. My work focuses on bridging basic science and clinical practice. Together with colleagues and collaborators, I study atrial fibrillation across different levels, from basic molecular and cellular mechanisms to translational and clinical studies. I am particularly interested in combining electrophysiology, computational modelling, and modern data science approaches to better understand disease mechanisms and improve patient care.I enjoy building collaborative research environments, mentoring young scientists, and translating scientific discoveries into technologies that can benefit patients. Over the years, I have had the privilege to contribute to developments in the field and to work with outstanding colleagues across disciplines and countries.
