About Ulla Kjarval

Ulla Kjarval is a New York-based photographer, social media consultant and food writer. With B.A.’s in History and Political Science from SUNY Albany, she has interned and worked in politics at both the state and federal levels. After graduating from college and living a year in her native Iceland, she moved back to New York to work in the art field where she helped to curate and promote international and traveling exhibitions. In 2006, along with her sister Melkorka Kjarval, she founded Sheepdog Print & Design, LLC, a company specializing in web design and social media strategy that helps small businesses and farms with branding and web solutions. Ulla founded the blog “Goldilocks finds Manhattan,” in 2006 and has also contributed to blogs such as “Goodlifer,” Mark Bittman.com, and “Civil Eats.” She is also a columnist at Upstate Life Magazine with her quarterly “Ulla’s Farm Fresh Notes.” Ulla was the official policy and recipe adviser for the Grass-fed party, an Internet campaign and website aimed at educating people about grass-fed beef. Her photography has been featured in the 2010 Pure Catskill guide, Upstate Life Magazine and the food sites Tasting Table, Farm to Table and many of Sheepdog Print and Design’s websites. Ulla’s childhood on a farm in upstate New York sparked her life-long interest and advocacy on behalf of family farms. Ulla believes that the Internet holds many opportunities for farmers to promote their product and engage with the current food movement, and was deemed “an Internet Expert” by writer Betty Fussell in the American Grass-fed Association’s newsletter.
