About Umer Akhter

I immigrated to Canada in 2016 and quickly took my first job as a security guard to pay the bills and to stop depleting our savings. I started looking for a job in the legal industry as I was a licensed lawyer back home, a Common Law jurisdiction, but usually failed when asked if I had any relevant Canadian work experience. I then decided to become a licensed lawyer but soon realized that it would be a long and difficult process. That was 7 years and two LLMs ago. “Grit is sticking with your future, day-in, and day-out, not just for a week not just for a month but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality.” Angela Lee Duckworth. I am currently enrolled with LSO as a licensing candidate having fulfilled all my NCA requirements and am seeking an Articling position. I am adept at conducting legal research and drafting concise documentation as well as professional correspondence. I am independently motivated but appreciate group efforts and collaborate effectively within a team setting. I am highly adaptable and can quickly learn new skills and software. I love spending time with my kids (that’s why it took me 7 years to do just two LLMs). Caring for them has made me a multi-tasker as I can now make dinner and still participate enough in colouring the unicorn that my daughter does not lose interest while ensuring the young one is not putting whatever he finds on the floor in his mouth and still find some time to prepare and submit an independent research paper on time. I love fixing things in my old crumbling home even though I have no idea how to do them (YouTube helps). I love watching movies except for horror movies and love listening to music while driving.
