About Urla Barrow
Urla Barrow, served as the Executive Director of Community Medical Care for a period of six years. Ms. Barrow also served in a similar capacity in the state of Washington, for the West Coast Community Clinics and in Boston Massachusetts as the Project Director of the Rox-Comp-Orchard Park Health Center. In 2003, Ms. Barrow opened an Assisted Living Facility for homeless mentally ill veterans in Maryland. Currently, Ms. Barrow is the Chief Executive Officer for the Institute of Urban Living dba. Hyacinth’s Place located in North East Washington DC. In 1996 Ms. Barrow completed a one-year Fellowship sponsored by the National Association of Community Health Centers and the Johns Hopkins University Department of Public Health. This Fellowship presented an opportunity to travel to a number of Community Health Center across the nation for educational and evaluation purposes. It also allowed for an opportunity to visit political representatives on Capitol Hill and speak on those critical issues of health care as it pertains to special and vulnerable populations. Over the span of her career Ms. Barrow held numerous public and mental health appointments. In addition, her community volunteer time included working with incarcerated women from the Framingham prison in Massachusetts, and with mentally ill elderly adults. Ms. Barrow is an ardent advocate for underserved populations and is committed to working with the community’s neediest residents. Her interest is medical, social and economic issues such as improving access to those services critical to individual and family’s basic functional needs. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Ms. Barrow also earned a Master’s Degree from the School for International Training in Brattleboro Vermont. In December the University of Wisconsin –Green Bay presented Ms. Barrow with “The outstanding Alumni of the Year” award. Urla Barrow remains committed to social and economic change for those populations in need of a voice.
