Background

About Valentina Galmozzi

I joined AKT II back in March 2005, fresh out of my Building Engineering degree at the Polytechnic of Milan, and I worked initially as a Graduate Design Engineer. Since rising to the position of Director, I have demonstrated my passion for high-rise complex structures in a range of exciting projects both in the UK and abroad. As part of my five-year degree course I had already spent seven months in London, in an industrial placement at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 with Arup. In this time I was able to add practical experience to my sound academic knowledge, but I sought the innovative and creative structures that AKT II had to offer and was an admissible chance. Recently, I have been involved in the biggest laboratory centre in Europe, The Francis Crick Institute where I was responsible for the design and the delivery of the concrete superstructure, becoming an expert in precast construction. In 2008, I have played a pivotal role on the prestigious Generali Tower, a 180m tall twisting building designed with Zaha Hadid Architects, in Milan, Italy. The structure’s complex facade and geometry required close liaison with our internal parametric analysis team to find the most efficient solution. The project enabled me to develop a strong understanding of how complex surfaces and structural analysis combine to create previously unimagined architectural shapes and spaces. My previous earlier projects included several buildings in the Brunel University Campus, but I soon became involved in schemes such as the Butterfield Innovation Centre in Luton where I contributed to the concrete frame design and secondary steelwork, and the award-winning Bourne Hill Offices in Salisbury, with Stanton Williams. I worked with a variety of materials and construction technique, from more common materials such as concrete and steel to Glass reinforcement plastics (GRP).
