Background
About Vanessa Dolosa
Ambition is the first step to success. The second step is action.” As I am writing this essay, my mind is full of all the positive thoughts. I always wanted to be a teacher abroad- to share a part of me to the world as a Filipino, to explore other’s culture, and to impart my knowledge to learners. I am Vanessa R. Dolosa, born and raised at the humble town of Hagonoy, in the province of Bulacan. As a child, I loved dressing up as a teacher, and dreamed that someday, this dream of mine will turn into reality. But life is not a bed of roses. My family is poor, and my parents can’t support my studies. After graduating high school, I worked many jobs for two years. I became a cashier, a canteen secretary, and grabbed a couple of Brand Ambassador Projects. After two years of working hard, and luckily with the help of a scholarship grant, I earned enough to sustain the first semester of college. I strived to become a consistent Dean’s Lister at Bulacan State University to help me avail of the institutional scholarship. After four years, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I taught at a private school for two years, and now a newly hired Elementary Public Teacher. I always look back at my experiences and somehow I know that there is still something that I wanted to achieve. I know that I can be more, I know that I can do more. With this kind of grit and mindset, are the wonderful things that awaits for me and the people around me. I know, ever since that I realized my dream, is that my life has a purpose and it has to be put to good use. You might be wondering why I still wanted to teach abroad even I already have a stable teaching job in the Philippines. It is because I believe that I can reach my full potential once I became exposed to other culture. Surely, I will learn a lot of differences in the educational system and I will also see to it that I will share what I have experienced and learned in the educational administration I was in. This process will now hone me to be a better teacher. Once I reached my full potential, it is not only me who will gain from it. The learners, my co-teachers, the institution where I will be teaching, we will be united to hold out our common goal and purpose. To teach without minding the barrier in each one’s differences. To use the differences as a way of learning and expanding one self’s knowledge. To TEACH the way of others and to LEARN others ‘ways. This is the purpose that drives me.
