Background
About Vanya Rose
Born and raised in Montreal, Vanya studied visual art and theatre from a young age, directing and producing various theatre productions, notably her stage adaptations of Virginia Woolf. After acting in film (two Alan Rudolph films, opposite John Turturro etc…) and living and studying abroad, she returned to Montreal, founded the Centaur Theatre’s assistant directing programme, and went on to receive a scholarship for excellence in order to complete her master’s in theatre directing. It was while completing her thesis that she transitioned into film directing, creating Montreal Stories, three short poetic films set throughout the 20th century, producing the final one with her newly established production company time's thievish progress to eternity FILMS. While attending the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors’ Lab, Vanya released her short, IMPOSSIBLE, an adaptation of a Katherine Mansfield story starring Tyler Hynes and Charlotte Le Bon. When she returned from Toronto she wrote, directed and produced At the Bottom of the Hill, a short film depicting a returning war veteran performed by the Australian-Canadian actress Hélène Joy. While awaiting financing for her first feature film, she created and produced two short films that explored a conceptual script she wrote entitled Avec Toi Sans Moi/With You Without Me starring Alexa-Jeanne Dubé. Vanya's first feature film, WOMAN IN CAR, which she wrote, directed and produced, featured Ms Joy alongside Liane Balaban and Gabrielle Lazure and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award 2022 for Achievement in Music. Vanya has lived in New York City, London, Paris and throughout Italy but always returned Montreal where she is now raising her two sons and creating her films. She is presently developing her new feature length film, The Crooked Timber.
