Background
About Venkateswaran Ganesan
I started out studying Microbiology in BSc in Chennai, India. Wanting to expand my horizon of knowledge and keep learning, I gained a masters degree in Human Genetics from Chennai, India. I had the privilege to publish my research as part of Dr. Venkatachalam Perumal's lab's research as a co-author in a publication on By-stander effect in chemo and radiotherapy. Wanting to expand my knowledge into actual hands on training, I took the opportunity to attempt a PhD at the University of Florida but failed to garner a fellowship after the first year. However, I was successful in completing a second Masters with additional training in the lab of Dr. Valerie de Crecy Lagard, helping discover a protein of unknown function (DUF1537) and was a co-author in a society journal on the functions of DUF1537 as a member of a novel kinase family helping recycle toxic intermediates into an essential metabolite. I returned to India failing to get a job opening in US and was a secondary researcher compiling a coffee table book on India's Scientific Achievements in Chennai. I then got an opportunity at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology in the lab of Dr. Madhuri Subbiah as a Project Assistant. I had a productive 1 year stint being a co-author in a publication on the diversity of Newcastle Disease Virus in Southern India. The institute's ex-Director Dr. Subeer S. Majumdar took me in his lab, liking my interest, industry and intelligence. I worked there for a year as a Senior Research Fellow and I have successfully completed my PhD under his able guidance in Jan 2025, additionally mentored by Dr. Nirmalya Ganguli. I have been trained in nearly all the major lab techniques, have a fine knack of understanding and maintaining instruments and have good experience managing a lab and working as a team in a large scientific environment. I have successfully published my first 1st author paper from my PhD thesis work on Goat Mammary Epithelial Cells being a better secretory system compared to traditional CHO cells to express tough to produce Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2. I also have a co-authored paper from my PhD lab published in 2022. I look forward in my career, with 10+ years of wet lab experience, ahead at a post-doc/industrial post-doc or an industrial opening in the US/EU to wield my knowledge and sharpen my training further. I can state with confidence that my diverse experience across fields in microbiology, genetics and biotechnology makes me an ideal candidate for the world of research and development.
