Professional Background: Vern is a respected investment and finance professional with diverse industry (technology, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, distribution, agriculture, professional services, etc.) and transactional experience predominantly as a capital provider. Most recently he has focused on alternative finance solutions (including equity, cash flow, mezzanine, subordinated debt and unitranche) for innovative, high-growth mid-market firms and business ownership transitions. Vern is known for his business development orientation, innovative financing structures, problem solving, timely execution, entrepreneurial mindset and collaborative approach to client and stakeholder relations. Community Involvement and Personal Interests: He is passionate about both helping entrepreneurs succeed and actively contributing to the community and leveraging his skills and experience volunteering, including former leadership, teaching and advisory roles with The City of Calgary, The Calgary Foundation, University of Calgary and the Calgary Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society. Vern is a recent mentor with the Calgary CFA mentorship program and a volunteer with the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). In his personal life, he enjoys spending time with family, coaching soccer, and numerous outdoor pursuits. He is learning how to fly fish (“catching” is still a work in progress) in some of Alberta’s incredible mountain lakes, streams and rivers.
