Background
About Vito Lopes
My passion for physics and my curiosity to understand the way the world works led me to Structural Engineering. When studying structural engineering I acknowledged that produce a greener, sustainable world is a responsibility that we all have, but especially those that belong to the AEC industry, since this is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and as the world evolves every day, the AEC industry should also evolve to a better version of itself, a sustainable, efficient way of working, that would inspire the society surrounding to do the same. The only way to produce a sustainable world is through the use of sustainable / recyclable materials, and timber is perfect to do so. Because of this I became a Timber Structural Engineer, what allow me to find new solutions every day to use timber to produce a better world, since timber is used to replace more polluting materials as concrete or steel. The use of the recyclable materials is mandatory to produce a sustainable world, but we need to do more than just that, we need to design buildings that are efficient at all levels, in order to allow us to have a responsible use of materials, and BIM is the way to do so. For this reason, I have been working with BIM since my academic journey. So far, I have worked with different types of software and different approaches of BIM use, such as Cadwork, Revit, Robot Structural Analysis, RFEM and a little bit of visual programming in Dynamo. I also developed some add-ins to Revit in C# in order to improve the effectiveness of my tasks. The result are all types of sustainable timber buildings, that were designed, produced and built in an efficient way with the use of BIM technology, what allow us no only to produce a better modern society, but also to have a positive impact in the future of the next generations.
