I've been employed in the First Nation Mental Health field for 12 years. For the past 6 years of the twelve, I have been supervising Children's Mental Health programs. In terms of funding, I am frustrated with the systemic barriers placed upon these services. However, that shouldn't come as a surprise as it has been an ongoing struggle since before my time. To truly make First Nation Children Mental Health programs effective the government must allow for First Nation mental Health staff input. When one is facing the ongoing challenges of every day crises, it is difficult to strategize and plan a way to make this shift without representation. It is similar with the disparity between Child Welfare and Mental Health in general. This is an area that needs immediate attention if this country is serious about changing the history of Canada.
