Background
About Waqas Javed
Currently at EA Technology, I am working on a project to enhance the resilience of a major electricity network by strategically deploying automation devices across high-voltage circuits. Using advanced analytical tools, I am conducting a detailed assessment to identify circuits with the greatest potential for reducing customer interruptions and downtime. This analysis will guide the prioritization and placement of automation technology, ultimately helping to improve service reliability and achieve key performance targets. In WSP as a Consultant/Senior Consultant, I worked on the Dynamic (RMS/EMT) Studies for grid restoration processes (Grid Compliance Studies) from Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) having a capacity of 300 MW - 200 MW at various sites in the UK. I also analysed fault ride-through (FRT) capabilities of the BESS and developed reports to be submitted to ESO for one of our clients. Furthermore, I performed Protection Coordination /P2-8/G5-5/Short-Circuit/Load Flow studies for PV/BESS installations for Global/UK sites. During my PhD, I worked on developing a DC protection criterion as recent developments in distributed renewable generation and energy storage systems have given rise to the concept of DC microgrid as a promising solution to enhance the resilience of smart distribution power networks with high penetration of renewable power and electric vehicle demands. By connecting the DC links of renewable generations, energy storage systems and possible loads interfaced by power electronics converters, low-voltage DC solutions can effectively reduce the one-off cost and boost system efficiency. Since the time constants for DC control and protections are very close, a comprehensive point of view has to be taken considering protections, converter design and operational control altogether. So far, the energy management and operational control schemes of the DC microgrid have been intensively explored though the protections of the DC microgrid are far from mature compared with its AC counterpart, which is the main bottleneck against practical industrial implementations. Therefore, developing a cost-effective protection solution is crucial to ensure the reliable operation of a low-voltage DC microgrid. Further, there is also a need to investigate how a DC microgrid system can be effectively incorporated into an existing distribution network to enhance the grid's resilience.
