Open a presentation you are working on and: 1. Clearly define your audience and your purpose. What does your audience know about the topic already? Do they support your recommendation? What do you want from them? To understand, be informed, to support your recommendation, or give you resources for a project? Remove the company logo from all the slides except the title and closing slide. It distracts from your message and takes up space. Remove the slide numbers too. Reduce the remaining words by another 50%. The slides are not your speaking notes. Use images, diagrams, pictures, and graphs to communicate your message. Images demonstrate feelings, ideas, and concepts. A lot more information can be communicated through a well-chosen picture. Good design is not ‘pretty making.' Good design enhances function and communicates your ideas clearly and enables the audience to follow you easily. We are designed for visual experience and have a surprisingly large brain capacity to remember thousands of images with few errors.
