Background
About Wesley Dyring
Wes Dyring (Deer-ing) joined the Seattle Symphony viola section in 1986. He also performs as soloist and chamber musician on both viola and violin, is a prolific arranger and orchestrator, and maintains a private studio teaching students of both instruments.Wes' numerous transcriptions, arrangements and orchestrations encompass five hundred years of music and include a wide diversity of composers, styles and cultures, especially that of Latin America. In addition to his main instruments, he also plays piano, recorder, harpsichord, viola da gamba, guitar, electric bass, various Latin American fretted instruments, and Latin percussion.Wes holds a Master of Music and Performer’s Certificate in Viola from the Eastman School of Music. His training in violin pedagogy with Lyman Bodman at Michigan State University was based upon principles of violin playing and teaching espoused by Ivan Galamian, which Wes has developed into something very much his own. For Wes, the goal of teaching music is not merely to have the student learn the skill of playing an instrument, but rather, to participate in the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual development of the individual human being.Belonging to a very culturally and racially diverse family, Wes is a strong proponent of unity in diversity. He is fluent in Spanish, having spoken it for over thirty-five years. Wes' language skills come into play in his Spanish-English translations, his favorite being of poetry and artistic writing. An active member of the Bahá’í Faith since 1980, Wes serves as Secretary of the Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Lynnwood, the governing council of the Lynnwood, WA Bahá’í community. He is also Assistant Director of Uniting Hearts Academy, and he participates whenever possible with the diversity and social outreach initiatives of the Seattle Symphony.
