Background
About Will James
I am an IP lawyer who advises clients on issues in a wide range of technical industries. My particular expertise is in advising on patent issues in the biotech, pharmaceutical, medical device, high tech and electronics sectors. In the biotech sector, I have advised on a number of core biotechnologies including litigating patents behind blockbuster monoclonal antibodies (Lucentis, Herceptin, Stelara, Talz, Repatha, Praluent), on formulation, dosing and second medical use patents, and on related litigation strategy in the UK and across Europe and the first ever case in the UPC. I have also been involved in large complex patent licensing disputes in the High Court and Court of Appeal. I have also advised on patent and IP issues relating to AI systems (cyber, facial recognition), telecoms, electronic tagging, chip technology, RFID technology and air traffic control systems. These cases involved detailed technical issues relating to telecoms, GPS, tracking systems and software, as well as related technologies. As someone who researched in neuroscience I have a particular interest in Artificial Intelligence and in particular its applications in the technology and life sciences sectors. I lead OC's International Life Sciences & Healthcare sector and also sit on the BioIndustry Association's IP Advisory Committee and the sub-committee on AI. I have advised on IP issues for a number of AI applications in drug discovery and medical imaging. I am a solicitor advocate with Higher Rights of Audience and have been involved in IP litigation at all levels of the UK courts, often as part of an integrated team of specialists from European countries in a co-ordinating role. I have a specialism in copyright and database right matters acting for software engineers and book publishers, architects and database owners. I also advise on commercial issues and IP licensing as well as due diligence, freedom to operate and IP strategy and I have been involved in a number of multi-jurisdictional commercial matters including complex worldwide securitisations of future patent royalty streams. I have particular, if not unique, experience advising the inventors on the first ever successful employee inventor compensation claim in the UK and continue to advise clients, both employer companies and employee inventors, in this area. I am a ranked lawyer in all of the key legal directories - Legal 500, Who's Who Legal for 'pharma and biotech' as well as 'patents', IAM Patent Juve Patents and I am also an MIP IP Star.
