About William Algaard

I currently work as a project director, multidisciplinary design director and structural engineer on architecturally ambitious projects around the world. I have expertise in developing and negotiating strategic design direction, based on first-principles approaches, advanced analytical methods and through close collaboration with architects to realise elegant and efficient solutions. I have a passion and track record of efficiency in tall building design and have helped signature architects realise striking buildings such as Centro Botin in Santander, Spain. I have a central role in the development and training of structural engineers, encourage strong multi-disciplinary collaboration, innovation and a client-focused approach to design. Since 2005 I have worked in Arup’s Buildings Engineering in London where I initially led the engineering design and delivery of signature project elements on the Art Institute of Chicago and Dubai Sports Complex. Subsequently I took on roles as structural engineering leader and/or project manager for a broad range of projects such as Torre BBVA in Mexico City, Bodø Cultural Quarter in Norway and Yongsan Landmark Tower in Seoul. More recently I have acted as project director and multidisciplinary design director on large, landmark projects such as Fubon A25 Tower in Taipei and Whittle School and Studios in Shenzhen. I also act as an internal design consultant and reviewer on tall building projects. My early career from 2002 to 2005 was focused around advanced analytical approaches in Structural Engineering at Arup. I developed a broad range of specialist skills within structural dynamics, blast resistance, seismic engineering and non-linear response that formed a basis for my later role leading building engineering design. From 1993 to 2002 I completed studies and research with Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Glasgow.
