Advising clients on all aspects of IPR filing, management, litigation and valuation. Drafting and filing about three patent applications per month in a wide range of technologies and countries, e.g. BE, DE, FR, NL, GB, US. Assisting in the conception and implementing of patent departments in industry, e.g. for a major telecommunications infrastructure manufacturer. Advising major international clients on their IP strategies, in particular with reference to developing international standards. Assisting in tracing, identifying, and rating potentially patentable inventions on the basis of prior art, existing patents of competitors and on input from marketing departments and advising on and preparing license agreements. Investigating the patent portfolio of competitor companies and actively participating in negotiations relating to offensive and defensive patent strategies. Controlling and initiating patent and design litigation in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany particularly with multinational parties. Drafting patent and utility model applications for a wide range of technologies including, biotechnology, electronic circuits, multimedia, computers, telecommunications, control, mechanical engineering, chemistry. Responsible for prior art IP searches. The regulation organisation (the "bar") for patent attorneys in the UK - IPREG - lists William Bird as an IP Litigator, i.e. able to plead before the up-and-coming Unified Patents Court
