About William Cavers
I am a senior geotechnical engineer and project manager at Gemtec. My main areas of interest are with tunnels, deep excavations (and the associated construction dewatering) and embankments on compressible soils. I have been involved with or managed the geotechnical aspects of various projects in these areas in Eastern Canada. One of my main areas of interest is in managing the interaction of the geotechnical aspects with the overall project in concert with the architects, engineers and the owner and managing the subsurface risks. Large projects are increasingly procured through a variety of mechanisms (design-bid-build, design-build, P3) and the industry and practices are changing to meet the challenges of these procurements. Designing, implementing and managing geotechnical investigations to meet the atypical requirements and aggressive schedules associated with these procurements requires changes from typical geotechnical engineering practice and a clear understanding of the overall project direction, procurement model and the owner's risk profile.
