About William Fleming

With nearly ten years of work experience in historic interpretation and preservation, I am passionate about learning and sharing the history and skills of silversmithing and hand engraving. As an Apprentice Engraver at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, I am pursuing my mission to educate and inspire guests about the importance and relevance of engraving in the 18th century and beyond. I am also proficient in communication, teamwork, and time management, which enables me to collaborate with other trade shops, researchers, and museum professionals to reach diverse and global audiences. In my current role as an Apprentice Engraver, I am learning, from a master engraver, the history and techniques of hand engraving, and I apply them to produce hand engraved products for display and sale. I also research various aspects of engraving throughout history, such as styles, materials, tools, and motifs, and interpret them to guests in an engaging and informative manner. Additionally, I develop and present lectures, livestreams, blog posts, and other educational materials to showcase the practice, history, and significance of engraving to audiences beyond visiting guests. Through these activities, I demonstrate my creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm for my craft, and contribute to the preservation and promotion of a valuable and fascinating art form.
