About William Scanlon

As CEO of Tyndall National Institute, Ireland’s leading research and innovation organisation, William Scanlon leads one of Europe’s foremost research activities in deep-tech and semiconductors. Tyndall specializes in nanotechnology, microelectronics, photonics, wireless communications, quantum systems, and energy research. Under his leadership, the institute has grown to over 700 staff, industry researchers, and PhD students, with an annual turnover exceeding €55 million. In 2020, William launched the institute’s ambitious strategic plan, Tyndall 2025, aiming to double the institute’s scale and maximize its societal impact by addressing global challenges such as digital equality, sustainable energy, accessible healthcare, and environmental sustainability. With more than 20 years of executive experience, William is known for his authentic and inspirational leadership style. He fosters innovation, sets a clear and shared vision, and empowers teams to deliver high-impact results. His extensive academic leadership includes being a full professor at Queen’s University Belfast, where he led the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science and the Centre for Wireless Innovation, and at the University of Twente William has a extensive track record in the leadership and management of innovation and developing the impact of, and commercialisation of, public research. His personal research expertise spans wireless communications, antennas, wave propagation, RF and microwave sensors, and medical device communications. He is a Fellow of the the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association, and the Irish Academy of Engineering. William is globally recognized for his pioneering work in wearable and implantable medical communications systems.
