About Wolfram Bechtel

As a highly qualified lawyer (PhD, law degrees in Germany and France), I worked for 14 years as a judge, public prosecutor and management consultant in the German judiciary. In 2012, I joined the Council of Europe and focus on human rights issues. For the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), I have conducted around 20 country monitoring visits, drafted the related monitoring and follow-up reports, organized the 25th Anniversary Conference, prepared the ECRI Roadmap for Effective Equality and the ground-breaking General Policy Recommendation No. 2 on Equality Bodies. From 2020, first as Co-Secretary and now as Secretary, I established, together with the Head of Department and the Director, the Steering Committee on Anti-Discrimination, Diversity and Inclusion (CDADI), which steers the work of four expert committees and three working groups. In the first four years of its existence, the Committee has prepared five recommendations which were adopted by the Committee of Ministers (non-binding standards) together with a good number of strategic documents, studies, thematic reports, implementation reviews and compilations of best practices.
