About Xander Gouws

Hey there! I'm a Master's in Chemistry student at the University of Waterloo, researching applications of AI to materials testing and discovery. I'm passionate about using my knowledge to have a positive impact on the world. For my Master's thesis, I'm using machine learning and simulation methods to test candidate materials for use in solid-state batteries. Other projects I've worked on have been in the intersection of science and medicine, focusing on biomaterials and ageing. I specialize in the theoretical and computational modelling of complex systems, and my academic potential in this field has earned me the Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship in Science & Technology. Additionally, I have a broad academic background, with a diverse range of coursework including physiology, psychology, and earth science. This gives me a unique perspective and allows me to understand problems across a variety of fields and act as a key communicator in interdisciplinary teams.
