Background

About Xander Warren

My professional journey has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of materials science, particularly in the context of materials behaviour in high-temperature (500+°C) environments. Throughout my career, I have gained valuable insights into various degradation mechanisms, including molten salt corrosion, carburization/oxidation, creep, microstructural evolution, radiation damage effects and phase change, in a wide range of industrially relevant alloys. Following-my graduate degree, I have 12 years’ experience supporting the nuclear sector; including 8 ½ years working on radioactive specimen analysis on behalf of EDF Energy (including my PhD studies) and 2 ½ years working directly for Moltex Energy, an SMR vendor, in both the UK and Canada. I hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Materials Science from the University of Bristol and have authored 34 publications in the field. My technical skills encompass scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis, and focused ion beam imaging/ milling. I have experience establishing/running labs, radiation protection, and the development and execution of experimental test programs. New Brunswick does not have an accrediting body for professional scientists, but I would be interested to discuss the possibility of accreditation as a Materials Engineer. Most recently I have been an active member of the Moltex Energy Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W) concept design team, working toward building and licencing a SMR in Canada. This has encompassed material selection for key components of the reactor, leading the preparation of the substantiation tasks list and acting as an expert reviewer in support of the system design. Within this role I have represented Moltex within the CSA Small Reactor Task Force (including both the Pressure Boundary and Routine Inspection and Maintenance working groups) and presented my work at the CNS annual conference.
